CORBIS® AND EVISION JOIN FORCES TO OFFER VISUAL SEARCH SOLUTION FOR CORBIS IMAGES
Leading Provider of Digital Images Announces Collaboration on eVe Visual Search Technology
SEATTLE, WA./OAKBROOK TERRACE, IL - November 08, 2001 - Corbis (www.corbis.com), the leading global provider of digital images to both the creative professional and consumer markets, and eVision, a leader in visual search technology, today announced that Corbis will begin supplying content for eVision's proprietary eVe technology for its online visual search engine. Under the terms of the agreement, Corbis and eVision will demonstrate the unique features and capabilities of the eVe visual search solution using a large selection of over 60,000 Corbis-branded images from their royalty-free collection.
"We're pleased to announce our agreement with eVision," said William Radcliffe, Director of Technology Development at Corbis. "By aligning our impressive solutions, together we will revolutionize the way digital photography, artwork, illustrations and video clips are stored, accessed and delivered."
"No one will argue, Corbis is an industry leader and innovator when it comes to digital images. Together, our two companies can demonstrate the power of world-class images, visually searchable and deliverable on demand," said Dr. Mat Malladi, eVision's CEO and co-founder. "With the world's first commercially available object based visual search solution for enterprises, we're the only technology that will allow customers to search, find and retrieve visual assets (digital images of people, places or products, and illustrations) based on content (color, texture, shape) and context (visual objects). We have a clear understanding of what it takes to deliver such a solution to an asset repository the size of Corbis."
Currently, the most popular way of finding visual assets within Corbis's Web sites is the use of text-based attributes. However, many Corbis customers are more visually oriented and think in terms of colors, shapes, and textures in addition to words. The goal if this collaboration is to clearly demonstrate how this alternative to text search can significantly improve the user experience and allow Corbis users other options to find the content they need faster and more accurately than with text search alone. It is part of an ongoing effort to make the Corbis offerings the best they can possibly be. The eVe technology makes implementing this very easy. eVe provides a rapid and automatic visual indexing process that makes assets available for use in seconds. Once the assets are cataloged, they are available for search using their visual content in milliseconds.
eVe Technology
The eVe technology integrates seamlessly with existing search mechanisms and digital asset management systems. Companies can use eVe to create their own Visual Vocabularies (representative samples of the images in the database). eVe is written in pure Java, is database independent, and will run on any platform that supports a Java Virtual Machine. With its small footprint, eVe can be integrated into any operating system, toolset or application.
About eVision eVision was founded in 1999 by a group of experts who have dedicated more than ten years of research to visual search technology. eVision's exclusive technology is the culmination of extensive research in the signal and image processing, pattern recognition, and computer vision fields. The proprietary technology distills images into their representative visual characteristics based on object, color, texture, and shape. eVision's revolutionary solution meets the needs of the $11 billion visual search technology market, including the Web-based search engine, Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), media asset management, and high-margin vertical market segments.
